Incident Overview
On April 7, 2016, at approximately 1200 coordinated universal time, a Douglas DC3-C aircraft, Colombian registration HK2663, was destroyed when it was consumed by a postimpact fire after executing a forced landing to a field. The forced landing was necessitated by a loss of power on the left engine during the initial climb from Puerto Gaitan Airport (SKPG) in Puerto Gaitan, Colombia.
Flight Details
The flight was planned to Vanguardia Airport (SKVV) in Villavicencio, Colombia, and was conducted under Colombian flight regulations. Onboard were two pilots and one crewmember, all of whom incurred minor injuries.
Sequence of Events
According to preliminary information released by the Government of Colombia, the pilots reported that the airplane experienced a failure of the left engine during the initial climb. Subsequently, they performed a forced landing to a field. During the landing, a postimpact fire ensued; however, the pilots and the technician were able to evacuate the airplane before it was consumed by the fire.
