Incident Overview
Approximately 15 minutes after departure, the pilot detected a burning smell and saw smoke filling the cabin. Shortly thereafter, the engine lost power, prompting the pilot to maneuver for an emergency landing. During the descent, the pilot heard a "clanging noise" emanating from the engine.
Emergency Landing and Damage
The pilot executed an emergency landing in a field. During the landing, the airplane struck blueberry bushes and a fence, resulting in substantial damage to the fuselage.
Postaccident Examination
Local law enforcement examined the aircraft after the accident and discovered that the oil filler cap was not secured on the oil filler tube. The retaining chain attached to the oil cap remained connected to both the cap and the tube. Further inspection of the oil cap and the oil filler tube revealed no evidence of damage.

The pilot stated that there were no preimpact mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airframe or engine that would have prevented normal operation.
