Student Pilot Loses Control During Second Solo Landing

Incident Overview

A student pilot was conducting his second solo flight when, during the landing flare, the nose of the airplane swung to the right after the main landing gear touched down. The pilot applied left rudder in an attempt to correct the deviation but reported that control was lost at that point. The airplane subsequently veered off the runway to the left, impacting an airport sign, and came to rest on an intersecting taxiway.

Damage Assessment

Post-incident inspection revealed substantial damage to the right wing of the airplane. No other damage was reported.

The student pilot stated that no mechanical malfunctions or failures were observed with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. The cause of the directional control loss was not further identified in the pilot's report.
