Accident Overview
On July 2, 2016, at approximately 1810 coordinated universal time, a Cessna A188 aircraft, Colombian registration HK1398, operated by Comercializadora de Aviacion Agricola - ECO, was destroyed in an accident near Puerto Lopez, Colombia. The pilot, who held a certificate, was fatally injured. The flight was conducted under Colombian flight regulations as an aerial application operation and had originated from the Pista Nueva York airstrip in Puerto Lopez.
Sequence of Events
According to preliminary information from the Government of Colombia, the airplane had completed its aerial application and was returning to the airstrip when its right wing collided with a utility tower located approximately 100 feet above ground level. Following the collision, the airplane impacted the terrain, and a postcrash fire ensued.
Damage
The aircraft was destroyed in the accident. The extent of damage to the utility tower was not specified in the initial report.
