Incident Narrative
On the day of the occurrence, the pilot was attempting a landing on a coastal beach. While the airplane was rolling along the landing surface, the left wing contacted a driftwood tree branch that extended outward from a higher berm. This impact caused the airplane to abruptly yaw left, resulting in a ground loop. The forces generated during the maneuver inflicted substantial damage to the elevator and both ailerons.
Pilot Observations
Prior to the landing, the pilot conducted a low-altitude flyover of the intended landing strip to inspect for hazards. He observed a tree on the berm but did not see the branch that struck the wing. The branch was likely obscured from his initial vantage point.
Mechanical Status
The pilot stated that there were no pre-impact mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airframe or engine. The aircraft was operating normally before the branch strike, and no anomalies were detected that would have precluded normal operation.
