Accident Overview
A pilot reported that during the landing approach to a grass runway, ample time was available to observe the runway surface, which appeared smooth and even. The pilot continued the approach and executed a soft-field landing. During the landing roll, the pilot noticed a puddle of water ahead and commanded full up elevator in an attempt to "jump" the puddle. However, the airplane had already slowed below flight speed.
Encounter with Water
The main landing gear of the tailwheel-equipped airplane struck standing water that was approximately 3 inches deep. The water was hidden by the grass. The impact caused the airplane to slow abruptly, and it subsequently nosed over.
Damage and Mechanical Condition
The accident resulted in substantial damage to the vertical tail and the right wing strut. The pilot reported that there were no mechanical malfunctions of the airplane.
Pilot Actions
The pilot's attempt to jump the puddle by applying full up elevator was unsuccessful because the aircraft's speed was insufficient. The sequence of events did not involve any reported issues with the aircraft's systems or structure prior to the accident.
