Incident Overview
A pilot experienced a loss of engine power due to fuel exhaustion while on a night visual meteorological conditions flight. The aircraft was receiving flight following from air traffic control when the pilot requested a diversion to avoid convective weather. Approximately 7 nautical miles from the destination airport, the fuel supply was exhausted, leading to a complete loss of engine power.
Forced Landing
The pilot executed a forced landing on an interstate highway. During the landing roll, the right wing of the aircraft struck a roadside sign, resulting in substantial damage to the wing. No other damage or injuries were reported.
Pilot Statement
In a postaccident interview, the pilot stated that he was aware of the weather conditions en route but did not anticipate the length of the diversion provided by air traffic control. He acknowledged that he should have departed with full fuel. The pilot also reported no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have precluded normal operation of the aircraft.
