Control upset during departure from Oslo Airport

No fatalities • Gardermoen, Norway

A Cessna 560 experienced a significant control upset shortly after takeoff from Gardermoen, Norway, resulting in structural damage to the wings.

What happened

On January 11, 2017, at approximately 1521 UTC, a Cessna 560, registered as LN-IDB, experienced a control upset during its departure from Oslo Airport (ENGM) in Gardermoen, Norway. The aircraft was performing a non-scheduled, repositioning cross-country flight from Switzerland to Sadefjord Airport (ENTO) in Torp, Norway.

Following a brief ground stop and a long high-speed taxi in light rain and snow, the aircraft departed ENGM. The crew did not perform deicing procedures on the ground prior to takeoff. After the takeoff sequence was completed and the landing gear and flaps were retracted, the aircraft became uncontrollable. The plane executed a 90-degree left turn and descended toward the ground. The crew managed to regain control and proceeded to the destination.

There were no injuries to the two pilots on board. However, the aircraft sustained substantial damage to both wings due to the encounter with high positive and negative G-forces during the event.
