Incident Overview
The accident occurred while the airplane was on the final approach leg of the traffic pattern to a turf runway. The private pilot recalled being at an altitude of 800 feet above ground level and aligned with the runway, but had no further memory of the flight.
Witness Account
A witness observed the airplane flying "low and slow" approximately 20 feet above the ground. The witness reported that the nose then pitched upward, the airplane "stalled," and the left wing struck the ground.
Airport Owner Observations
The owner of the airport noted that trees at the approach end of the runway were damaged, and broken branches were found scattered at the base of the trees immediately after the accident.
Aircraft Damage
The fuselage and wings sustained substantial damage consistent with a collision with trees and terrain.
Pilot Statement
The pilot stated that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane during the flight that would have precluded normal operation.
