Tailwheel Airplane Impacts Mountain Ridge During Aerial Application

Accident Overview

A pilot operating a tailwheel-equipped airplane reported an accident that occurred while transitioning a mountain ridge after completing an aerial application. According to the pilot's account, he initiated a climb to a safe altitude in rising terrain but recognized that clearing the mountain top would be "close." He attempted a left turn but determined the terrain would not allow the maneuver. He continued straight and impacted the mountain top approximately ten feet from the crest.
