Flight Details

The pilot of a multi-engine, retractable-gear airplane reported that he was flying in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) and leveled off at 8,000 feet mean sea level. While configuring the airplane for cruise flight, he noticed that the right engine cross-feed fuel selector was positioned for the left tank. The left tank fuel indicator showed empty, while the right tank indicator displayed 45 gallons remaining.

Pilot Actions

Believing the fuel indicators had malfunctioned, the pilot established an approach to a nearby highway intersection. He subsequently landed on the asphalt highway with the landing gear stowed. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the lower fuselage longerons.
