Accident Sequence
A pilot of a tundra tire–equipped tailwheel airplane reported that during landing, the airplane touched down hard and bounced significantly. The pilot applied power to initiate a go-around. While turning in crosswind conditions, the airplane encountered a downdraft, which pushed it toward the ground. Subsequently, the airplane impacted trees.
Damage
The accident resulted in substantial damage to the fuselage, empennage, and both wings of the airplane.
Pilot Report
Following the accident, the National Transportation Safety Board made multiple requests for the pilot to complete and return NTSB Form 6120.1 Pilot/Operator Aircraft Accident/Incident Report. The pilot did not comply with these requests.
Weather Information
An automated weather observation station located at the airport recorded conditions about 15 minutes before the accident: wind from 170 degrees at 7 knots, gusting to 16 knots. The direction in which the airplane was landing at the time of the accident is unknown.
