Takeoff Drift Leads to Spin After Encounter with Tall Grass

Event Description

A pilot reported that during the takeoff roll for an agricultural flight, the airplane drifted left of the runway centerline. As a result, the left wing and spray boom encountered tall grass adjacent to the runway. The airplane subsequently spun approximately 270°.

Damage

The airplane sustained substantial damage to both wings and the fuselage.

Pilot Report

The pilot stated that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.

Safety Recommendation

In the Operator/Owner Safety Recommendation section of the NTSB Form 6120.1, the pilot noted that the tall grass next to the runway "will be maintained shorter."
