Accident Sequence
According to the pilot, while maneuvering a helicopter at low altitude for an aerial application flight, an unsecured clipboard that was on the seat next to him fell and became lodged under the anti-torque pedals. Unable to free the clipboard, the pilot decided to perform a precautionary landing. As the helicopter descended to approximately 5 to 10 feet above ground level, tail rotor authority was lost, and the helicopter began to rotate to the right. After about two full rotations, the pilot was able to touch down the helicopter.
Damage
During the touchdown, the stinger (tail skid) folded into the tail rotor, causing substantial damage to the tail boom. The helicopter sustained structural damage to the tail boom as a result of the event.
Pilot Report
The pilot stated that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the helicopter that would have precluded normal operation. No other contributing factors were reported.
