Incident Summary
During a flight in the traffic pattern, the pilot extended the landing gear as part of the normal approach sequence. While maneuvering, a helicopter transitioning the airport drew the pilot's attention. On the base leg to final approach, the pilot inadvertently operated the landing gear control in the retraction direction, causing the gear to retract. The airplane subsequently touched down with the landing gear in the retracted position.
Pilot Report
The pilot stated that the distraction caused by the helicopter led to the mistaken gear retraction. The pilot explicitly noted that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
Damage
The fuselage sustained substantial damage as a result of the landing with the gear retracted.
Mechanical Condition
According to the pilot, the airplane experienced no mechanical issues prior to the accident. The pilot reported that all systems were functioning normally before the inadvertent retraction.
