Accident Overview
A non-powered glider experienced a landing accident when it touched down short of the intended runway, sustaining substantial damage to the fuselage. The pilot reported that no mechanical malfunctions or failures were present before the accident.
Pilot Report
The pilot stated that while on the downwind leg for landing, the glider was higher than normal due to encountered lift. On final approach, the glider encountered a gusting headwind, which reduced the ground speed. As a result, the glider was unable to maintain sufficient altitude and touched down short of the intended runway.
Weather Conditions
About two minutes before the accident, the automated weather observation system located nine miles east of the airport reported wind from 260 degrees at 14 knots, gusting to 23 knots. The intended runway for landing was Runway 27U.
Damage
The glider's fuselage sustained substantial damage in the landing.
