Accident Overview

On August 8, 2017, at approximately 1513 coordinated universal time (UTC), a Cessna U206G, registration 8R-GPR, experienced a forced landing in trees shortly after departing from Eteringbang Airstrip (SYET) in Eteringbang, Cuyuni-Mazaruni Region, Guyana. The aircraft was substantially damaged, and the pilot sustained serious injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time, and no flight plan was filed for the commercial cargo flight.

Sequence of Events

The flight originated from SYET at about 1512 UTC, destined for Ekereku Bottom Airport (SYEK) in Ekereku, Cuyuni-Mazaruni Region. Shortly after takeoff, at an altitude between 200 and 300 feet above ground level, the pilot reported hearing a decrease in engine rpm, accompanied by a corresponding loss of altitude. The fuel selector was positioned to the right tank, which contained approximately 25 gallons of fuel. Unable to maintain altitude, the pilot initiated a descent for an off-airport forced landing. The aircraft subsequently impacted trees in a rain forest approximately one mile from the departure airstrip.

Investigation

The accident investigation is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Guyana. The engine, which had accumulated about 1,500 hours since new, and the propeller will be retained for further examination.
