Sequence of Events
The student pilot and flight instructor were practicing crosswind takeoffs and landings in a tailwheel-equipped airplane. During the second landing, while a few feet above the runway on short final, the airplane's nose turned sharply to the left. According to the student, the flight instructor yelled a command, took control of the airplane, and applied full power. The flight instructor reported that after assuming control, he attempted a go-around but was unsuccessful. The airplane continued moving left, passing through low brush and down an embankment. The tailwheel then struck the edge of the embankment, causing the airplane to nose over.
Damage
Both wings and wing struts sustained substantial damage as a result of the accident.
Weather Conditions
The accident airport had a single runway designated as Runway 2. An automated weather observation station located about 7 miles north of the airport recorded winds from 310° at 11 knots approximately 8 minutes after the accident.
Pilot Reports
Both the student pilot and flight instructor stated that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation prior to the accident.
