Incident Overview
A flight instructor reported that a student pilot, while flying solo in the traffic pattern, decided to practice a soft field takeoff after completing a series of takeoffs and landings. The student applied back pressure and full throttle but did not add sufficient right rudder. As a result, the airplane veered off the runway to the left, struck the Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) lights, and came to rest off the runway.
Damage and Mechanical Condition
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and engine mount. The flight instructor stated that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions that would have precluded normal operation.

According to the instructor, the student's improper rudder input during the soft field takeoff led to a loss of directional control, causing the airplane to depart the runway surface. No other factors were noted.
