Accident Description
During the approach to runway 28, the pilot observed a dramatic increase in the descent rate on the vertical speed indicator (VSI) and applied full power. Despite this, the airplane landed hard. Upon touchdown, the pilot heard a "pop" and initially believed the main landing gear tires had failed. The airplane then exited the right side of the runway and struck a runway light.
Damage
The accident resulted in substantial damage to the aft bulkhead, stringer, and skin of the airplane.

According to the METAR at the accident airport around the time of the event, the wind was from 230° at 28 knots, gusting to 42 knots. No other weather conditions were reported.

The pilot stated that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have precluded normal operation of the airplane.
