Accident Narrative
The pilot of an experimental tailwheel-equipped airplane reported that during the takeoff roll, the airplane bounced and veered to the left side of the runway. The pilot indicated he believed the airplane would straighten itself out, but instead the tail lifted, and the airplane continued moving left. The left main landing gear subsequently impacted a snowbank, causing the airplane to exit the left side of the runway. The airplane came to rest in the safety area.
Weather Conditions
According to the METAR at the accident airport, around the time of the accident the wind was variable at 4 knots and the sky was clear.
Aircraft Damage
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the empennage. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
