What happened
On January 17, 2018, at 18:00 local time, a Robinson R44 helicopter, registration VH-HGX, suffered a partial loss of engine power during the initial climb following takeoff. In response to the power loss, the pilot performed an autorotation. During the landing maneuver, the aircraft struck the ground with significant force and rolled over near Ayres Rock, Australia.
The accident resulted in two serious injuries and two minor injuries. There were no fatalities. The helicopter sustained substantial damage.
