Incident Overview
A commercial pilot reported that during a personal flight at night, he was executing an instrument landing system (ILS) approach. After disconnecting the autopilot at 1,500 ft mean sea level (MSL), he had the runway in sight by 1,000 ft MSL. The pilot continued the approach, but the airplane crossed the runway threshold too high and too fast.
Landing Sequence
Upon touchdown, the airplane bounced at least twice. The pilot added power in an effort to regain control. On the third or fourth bounce, the right main landing gear and the nose gear collapsed. Subsequently, the airplane slid off the side of the runway and came to rest on the grass.
Damage Assessment
The right wing sustained substantial damage. The pilot noted that there were no mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane or engine that would have precluded normal operation.
Pilot Report
The pilot's report indicated that the approach was conducted under night conditions, and no anomalies with the aircraft systems were identified. The cause of the bounced landing and subsequent gear collapse was attributed to the high and fast approach.
