Event Details
The pilot was conducting a takeoff when a flock of ducks crossed the aircraft's flight path. With insufficient runway remaining to abort the takeoff, the pilot opted to stay low in an attempt to fly beneath the birds. The aircraft was unable to climb, and its tailwheel struck a fencepost located beyond the departure end of the runway.
Damage and Outcome
After the strike, the pilot returned to the airfield and landed safely. An inspection revealed substantial damage to the rudder and right elevator. The pilot reported that no mechanical malfunctions or failures were present before the incident that would have hindered normal operation.
