Incident Overview
On March 1, 2018, a Tez Jet Airline Avro RJ85 encountered an uncontained failure of the No. 1 (leftmost) engine's turbine during the climb phase of flight. The aircraft was powered by four Honeywell (formerly Lycoming) LF507-1F turbofan engines. Following the failure, the flight crew initiated a return to Bishkek-Manas International Airport in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, where an uneventful landing was performed using the three remaining engines.
Investigation
The investigation is being conducted by the Kyrgyzstan Ministry of Transport and Communications, Department of Air Transport and Air Space Use. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is participating under the provisions of ICAO Annex 13 as the State of Manufacture for the engine. At this stage, no probable cause has been determined, and the investigation is ongoing.
