Incident Overview
A pilot operating a tailwheel-equipped airplane reported a loss of directional control during the takeoff roll, resulting in a runway excursion and collision with a precision approach path indicator (PAPI) light.
Pilot Report
According to the pilot, the takeoff roll began with a slow advancement of the throttle while applying full aft yoke and right rudder pedal. As the airplane accelerated, the pilot believed that an overcorrection with right rudder had caused the airplane to veer to the right. In response, the pilot released the right rudder pressure. Simultaneously, the tail lifted off the ground.
Sequence of Events
Immediately after the tail rose, the airplane veered sharply to the left and departed the runway surface. Subsequently, the right wing of the airplane impacted a PAPI light installation.
Damage
The right wing sustained substantial damage as a result of the impact.
Mechanical Condition
The pilot stated that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
