Incident Overview
A student pilot, flying solo, experienced a wind-related incident during landing. According to the pilot's report, while on final approach, a gust of wind "tilted" the airplane to the right. Attempting to correct and maintain the centerline, the pilot touched down hard on the left main landing gear. Despite the hard landing, the pilot was able to taxi the airplane to parking without further complications.
Damage Assessment
The incident resulted in substantial damage to the left wing spar. The airplane's structural integrity was compromised in that area, requiring repair before further flight.
Weather Conditions
At the time of the accident, an automated weather observation system located approximately 8 miles southeast of the airport reported wind from 290° at 3 knots. The student pilot was landing on runway 11.
Mechanical Status
The student pilot reported that no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions were present. The airplane was operating normally prior to the landing event.
