Accident Overview
A tailwheel-equipped airplane sustained substantial damage after it veered left during landing and exited the runway into grass, striking the right wingtip on the ground.
Pilot Report
The pilot reported that she overflew the airport to assess wind direction before landing. During touchdown in variable crosswind conditions, the airplane was at or near stall speed when it encountered a gust of wind. The airplane veered left. The pilot attempted to correct by applying right rudder and right brake. Subsequently, the airplane departed the left side of the runway into the grass, and the right wingtip contacted the ground. After the event, the pilot was able to taxi the airplane to parking.
The pilot stated that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions that would have precluded normal operation.
Weather Information
Automated weather observations at the airport around the time of the accident indicated wind from 140° at 11 knots, gusting to 18 knots. The pilot landed on runway 34.

Inspection revealed substantial damage to the right wing, right wing spar, and right wing lift strut.
