Incident Overview

A glider pilot reported an event during a local flight when the aircraft encountered a sudden loss of lift. The pilot decided to return to the departure airport. While approximately 3-4 miles from the airport, the glider experienced moderate to severe sink, prompting the pilot to set up for a landing in a nearby field.

Sequence of Events

At about 200 feet above the ground, the glider encountered a strong updraft lasting 15-30 seconds. The pilot stated that even with full spoilers deployed, it was obvious he would not be able to land in the intended field. He then stowed the spoilers, pitched up slightly, and focused on finding an alternate landing site.

During touchdown at the alternate site, the pilot noticed sprinkler pipes and wheels on the ground. Believing he would still hit the sprinkler pipes, he abruptly pitched the nose down to avoid the industrial farm sprinklers and landed hard on the field.
