Overview
A glider pilot reported that, during a return to the airport, the aircraft descended more rapidly than anticipated. The pilot elected to divert to an alfalfa field for a precautionary landing. Shortly after touchdown, a gust of wind caused the left wing to suddenly contact the ground, triggering a ground loop to the left.
Damage
The glider sustained substantial damage, including to the fuselage, empennage, and right aileron.

The pilot stated that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the glider that would have precluded normal operation.
Environmental Conditions
The pilot reported that the wind was from 140 degrees at 10 to 20 knots with gusts. The landing direction was to the south.
