Incident Overview
A glider pilot reported that, during approach, the unimproved airport blended into the surrounding environment, making the runway unrecognizable. The pilot therefore decided to land on a nearby dirt road.
Landing Sequence
While concentrating on the landing, the pilot failed to extend the landing gear. On short final, the pilot noticed the landing gear was not extended. As the pilot changed hands to extend the landing gear, the glider drifted to the right of the dirt road. Upon touchdown on the dirt road, the glider veered right and struck a utility box.
Damage and Mechanical Status
The glider sustained substantial damage to the fuselage and canopy. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the glider that would have precluded normal operation.
