Incident Overview
A student pilot was conducting a landing when the right crosswind increased. The airplane turned to the left, touched down hard, and bounced. Following the first bounce, the student attempted to maintain attitude, but the aircraft descended and bounced a second time. During the second bounce, the nose landing gear collapsed. On the third touchdown, the propeller struck the runway, and the airplane skidded to a stop on the runway.
Damage Assessment
The accident resulted in substantial damage to the engine mounts.
Mechanical Condition
The Chief Flight Instructor reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
Weather Conditions
The automated weather observation station at the airport reported that, around the time of the accident, the wind was from 210° at 10 knots. The airplane was landing on runway 17L.
