Accident Details
During takeoff on a gravel and dirt airstrip, a tailwheel-equipped airplane experienced an unexpected crosswind gust. The pilot reported that the gust, described as a "rogue crosswind gust of wind", pushed the airplane to the right. During the takeoff roll, the airplane struck a bump on the airstrip. This caused the airplane to become airborne prematurely. The airplane continued drifting to the right and subsequently landed hard in a creek adjacent to the airstrip. The pilot noted that the prevailing wind was light and variable and not gusting before the event. The airplane was departing to the south.
Aircraft Damage
The hard landing in the creek resulted in substantial damage to the airplane's fuselage. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions that would have precluded normal operation.
