Accident Details
During the takeoff roll, the tailwheel-equipped airplane veered to the left and exited the runway, subsequently striking trees. The impact resulted in substantial damage to the left wing. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions that would have precluded normal operation.
Pilot and Aircraft Status
According to an FAA inspector, the pilot did not hold a current biannual flight review or a current medical certificate, and the airplane was not in an airworthy condition. The pilot did not submit the NTSB Form 6120.1 Pilot/Operator Aircraft Accident/Incident Report.
Weather Conditions
The pilot stated that during takeoff, the wind was gusting. The automated weather observation station located about 12 nautical miles from the accident airport recorded wind from 140° at 7 knots around the time of the accident. The airplane had departed on runway 27.
