A helicopter conducting a transition flight performed a touchdown autorotation on asphalt, slid off the runway into grass, and rolled onto its side, sustaining substantial damage. Both pilots reported no mechanical issues.

Accident Summary

A helicopter equipped with skids was involved in an accident during a training flight. The purpose of the flight was to conduct an aircraft transition flight. The pilot under instruction performed a touchdown autorotation on an asphalt runway. The helicopter touched down in a level attitude, just to the right of the centerline, and began sliding to the right on its skids. The sliding continued until the helicopter went off the right side of the runway into the grass. After entering the grass, the helicopter spun to the right and rolled onto its left side.

Damage

The helicopter sustained substantial damage to the main and tail rotor drive system.

Pilot Reports

Both pilots reported that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures with the helicopter that would have precluded normal operation.
