Night Hard Landing Damages Wing in Runway Excursion

Accident Details

The pilot reported that during a night landing, the flare was executed too high. The airplane descended and impacted the runway hard. The subsequent bounce or directional deviation caused the airplane to exit the paved surface. The pilot was able to maneuver the airplane back onto the runway without further incident. No preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions were noted.

Aircraft Damage

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the airplane sustained substantial damage to the left-wing rib. The extent of damage required structural repair before further flight.

Weather Conditions

The automated weather observation station at the airport recorded conditions approximately 20 minutes after the accident. The wind was from 050° at 14 knots, gusting to 19 knots. Light rain was present. The landing was conducted on runway 01.
