Sequence of Events
During a landing conducted as part of flight training, the flight instructor reported that he was on the flight controls while the student pilot was flying. At touchdown, the airplane was positioned to the right of the runway centerline. The student pilot then either applied left brake or left rudder input. This action caused the airplane to enter a skid. To counter the skid, the flight instructor applied full right rudder. Despite this input, the airplane continued to deviate left and exited the runway. It subsequently struck a runway sign. After striking the sign, the airplane came to rest inverted.
Damage Assessment
The accident resulted in substantial damage to the airplane. Specifically, the fuselage and empennage sustained substantial damage.
Pilot Statements
The flight instructor reported that no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions were present that would have precluded normal operation. The airplane was operating normally prior to the event.
