Incident Overview
A solo student pilot in a tailwheel-equipped airplane reported that the intended maneuver was a three-point landing. During the landing flare, airspeed decreased. Just prior to touchdown, the pilot applied aft yoke pressure to pin the tailwheel on the runway. As the main landing gear contacted the runway surface, the airplane veered left, exited the left side of the runway, and subsequently collided with taxiway signage.
Damage Assessment
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the left main landing gear attachment points.
Pilot Report
The student pilot reported that no mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane were observed that would have precluded normal operation.
