Introduction
A tailwheel, ski-equipped airplane sustained substantial damage after nosing over during an off-airport landing on a snow-covered ridge. The pilot reported that the right ski struck a firm snow drift, causing the aircraft to pitch forward.
Accident Details
According to the pilot, the landing was being conducted off airport on a snow-covered ridge. During the landing, the back of the right ski struck a firm snow drift approximately 6 inches tall. The impact caused the right ski to pitch forward, and its tip dug into the crusty snow. The airplane subsequently nosed over.
Aircraft Damage
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the fuselage, empennage, and lift strut. No other damage items were reported.

The pilot stated that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
