Accident Overview
A tailwheel-equipped airplane experienced a ground loop during the landing roll. According to the pilot, the airplane suddenly veered left, ground looped, exited the runway surface, and nosed over. The pilot reported no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions that would have precluded normal operation.
Damage Assessment
Substantial damage was sustained to the vertical stabilizer and right wing. The right tire was found to be blown.
Tire Damage Evidence
Photographs of the tire damage provided by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are consistent with sideloading of the right main landing gear during the left ground loop.
Weather Conditions
The automated weather observation station at the airport reported that, around the time of the accident, the wind was variable at 4 knots.
