Overview
A pilot reported a runway excursion during landing, resulting in substantial damage to the airplane's empennage. The incident occurred after the airplane touched down and began to wheelbarrow, then veered left.
Sequence of Events
According to the pilot, shortly after touchdown, the airplane entered a wheelbarrow attitude and veered left. Upon reaching the end of the runway, the pilot applied aft yoke input, but the airplane departed the runway surface, struck a berm, and nosed over.
Aircraft Damage
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the empennage. The pilot stated that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions that would have precluded normal operation.
Weather Conditions
Approximately 10 minutes after the incident, the automated weather observation station at the airport reported wind from 330 degrees at 15 knots, gusting to 23 knots. The airplane landed on runway 20; the pilot indicated that he intended to land on runway 24.
