Accident Details
During the takeoff roll, the pilot of a tailwheel-equipped airplane reported that the aircraft abruptly veered to the right. In response, the pilot overcorrected to the left. After reducing engine power to idle, the pilot overcorrected to the right. Attempting to correct the path, the pilot applied full brakes, but the airplane exited the runway to the left and nosed over.
Aircraft Damage
The airplane sustained substantial damage to the vertical stabilizer, rudder, right wing, and left wing.
Pilot's Report
The pilot reported no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions that would have precluded normal operation.
Weather Conditions
An automated weather observation station located 2 miles to the south reported that, about 25 minutes after the accident, the wind was from 340° at 3 knots. The airplane was taking off on runway 17.
