Accident Details
On July 23, 2019, at approximately 1107 coordinated universal time, a Richards Heavylift Helo Inc. UH-1H helicopter, South African registration ZS-HLJ, experienced a loss of engine power while operating near Woodbush farm. The helicopter was equipped with a Textron Lycoming T-53 engine and was engaged in firefighting operations at the time.
Following the power loss, the pilot initiated an autorotation to a field below. The helicopter impacted the ground hard during the landing sequence, causing the main rotor blades to strike the tail rotor shaft. The pilot, who was the sole occupant on board, was not injured.
Investigation
The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) is leading the investigation into the incident. As the state of manufacture of the helicopter and its engine, the United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has designated an accredited representative to assist the SACAA in its investigation.
The SACAA has requested that all inquiries regarding this accident be directed to their office. Further details regarding the investigation have not been released at this time.
