Incident Overview
A flight instructor reported that, while en route on an instrument flight plan at approximately 4,000 feet, the aircraft entered a cloud where a flock of large black birds were circling. A bird impacted the stabilator during this encounter.
Pilot Actions
Upon impact, the instructor disengaged the autopilot and checked the flight controls for any adverse effects. No adverse effects were observed. The instructor then decided to return to the departure airport and landed the aircraft without further incident.
Aircraft Damage
Post-landing inspection revealed that the stabilator had sustained substantial damage. No other damage was reported.
Mechanical Condition
The flight instructor reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the aircraft that would have precluded normal operation.
