Pilot's Account
The pilot reported that the accident occurred while attempting to depart from an ice-covered runway in a strong crosswind. After lining up on the runway, the pilot added power and felt the airplane slide to the right. In an effort to correct the slide, the pilot applied left rudder and left brake, but the airplane did not respond. The pilot then reduced engine power to idle and again applied left rudder and left brake, but the airplane continued sliding. Subsequently, the pilot pulled the mixture to idle cutoff. The airplane slid off the runway and impacted a ditch.
Aircraft Damage
The right wing of the airplane sustained substantial damage as a result of the impact with the ditch. No other damage details were provided in the report.
Mechanical Status
The pilot reported no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions that would have precluded normal operations. The pilot did not indicate any issues with the aircraft systems or controls prior to the loss of control.
