History of the Flight
On 14 January 2019, a Tecnam P2006T, registration YR-MDT, operated by the Civil Aviation Superior School (Școala Superioară de Aviație Civilă), was scheduled for a training flight between 14:00 and 15:30 LT under visual meteorological conditions (VMC) with a VFR flight plan filed for the route Băneasa Airport (LRBS) – Strejnic Aerodrome (LRPW) – Urziceni – LRBS.
A pre-flight briefing was conducted at the operator's dispatch, covering weather, route, and aerodrome data for LRPW. A touch-and-go landing was planned at LRPW. The crew consisted of a male instructor aged 59 with 2500 hours of flight experience and a male student aged 50 with 210 total hours (10 on type).
At 14:00 LT, the crew performed pre-flight checks; takeoff from runway 25 occurred at 14:50 LT, climbing to 1000 ft. According to crew statements, the flight to LRPW was conducted at altitudes of 900–1200 ft and speeds of 90–100 kts. Due to turbulence, the stall warning was heard frequently.
For landing at LRPW, the crew received clearance to enter the traffic pattern for runway 26. During the third turn, the final approach checklist was initiated, and the aircraft was configured for landing: flaps to first position, landing lights on, and propeller pitch levers forward. The instructor corrected the propeller pitch lever position, reducing RPM to 2000 and stating they would be moved forward after aligning with the landing direction. During the fourth turn, flaps were set to landing position. After alignment, the instructor briefed the touch-and-go procedure, emphasizing that touchdown should occur in the first third of the 750 m runway at near stall speed.
The final approach checklist, interrupted by the instructor's intervention, was not resumed.
Touchdown occurred with the landing gear retracted, just after the threshold of runway 26. The aircraft slid on its ventral fuselage for approximately 153 m before stopping. The instructor shut down the engines and reported the event to the LRPW operational controller.
Aircraft Information
The aircraft was a Tecnam P2006T, serial number 186, manufactured in 2016. It is a four-seat, low-wing, twin-engine aircraft powered by two Rotax 912S3-01 engines and MTV-21-A-C-F propellers. It had accumulated 684 flight hours and 2399 cycles. The airworthiness certificate was valid.
The landing gear system is electro-hydraulic, controlled by a position selector on the left instrument panel. The gear position indication system includes green lights for down-and-locked, a red transit light, and a yellow GEAR PUMP ON light. During the on-site investigation, the gear selector was found in the UP (retracted) position.
Aerodrome Information
Strejnic Aerodrome is located west of Ploiești, Prahova County, and is a certified aerodrome managed by the Civil Aviation Superior School. It has two runways: an asphalt runway (08/26, 750 x 30 m) and a grass runway (09/27, 790 x 30 m). The elevation is 573 ft / 174 m. Traffic is VFR day/night. The incident occurred on the asphalt runway.
Damage and Injuries
The aircraft sustained substantial damage to the lower fuselage. No persons were injured.
