Pilot Loses Control in Gusty Wind During Landing, Strikes Tree

Accident Overview

A private pilot was returning to land at his private airstrip after a local flight. The pilot reported that the wind was strong and gusty during the approach. While flaring for landing, the airplane bounced, and the pilot subsequently lost control of the aircraft.

Sequence of Events

After the bounce, the airplane departed the runway to the left. The left wing struck a tree, resulting in the wing separating from the fuselage. The accident caused substantial damage to the airplane. The pilot stated that there were no preaccident mechanical anomalies with the airplane that would preclude normal operations.
