Incident Overview
A pilot reported that while maneuvering at low altitude on the leeward side of a ridge to follow elk, the aircraft encountered a downdraft. The pilot noted a slight pitch-up and a decrease in airspeed.
Pilot Actions
In response, the pilot lowered the nose attitude, applied full engine power, and turned away from the hill. Despite these actions, the aircraft's descent rate continued to increase. Near the ground, the pilot attempted to flare in ground effect, but the descent rate did not slow as expected.
Outcome
The aircraft landed hard, causing the left main landing gear to bend under the airplane and substantially damaging the left wing when it struck the ground.
