What happened
On September 11, 2020, a collision occurred at the Piotrków Trybunalski (EPPT) aerodrome involving a Grob G102 Astir CS glider and a parked Tecnam P2006T aircraft. Following a thermal flight, the glider pilot decided to land near the hangars, choosing a location outside of the designated runway area.
The pilot initiated the landing approach toward the hangars and the aircraft parked in the vicinity. Due to an error in calculating the landing distance, the glider failed to stop before reaching the obstacles. The right wing of the glider struck the vertical stabilizer of the parked SP-LFG, causing the stabilizer to be broken off. The glider, registration SP-3841, sustained damage to its right wing. The pilot sustained no injuries.
The investigation
The PKBWL investigation established that there was no air traffic controller on duty at the aerodrome at the time of the incident. The investigation focused on the pilot's decision-making regarding the landing site and the execution of the landing maneuver near the hangar area.
