Incident Overview
On 11 September 2020, at the Piotrków Trybunalski airport (EPPT), a serious incident occurred involving a Grob G102 Astir CS glider (registration SP-3841) and a Tecnam P2006T aircraft (registration SP-LFG). The Tecnam was correctly parked on a parking stand. No flight operations director was present at the airport at the time.
Sequence of Events
The glider pilot, after completing a thermal flight, decided to land close to the hangars, outside the designated landing strip. The approach was made towards the hangars and the parked aircraft. Due to a miscalculation of the landing distance, the glider could not stop before obstacles and, at the end of the landing roll, struck the vertical stabilizer of the Tecnam with its right wing. The impact caused the stabilizer to break off and damaged the glider's right wing. The pilot did not sustain injuries.
Cause of the Incident
The investigation identified two causes: 1. Planning a landing outside the designated strip. 2. Incorrect landing distance calculation.
Preventive Actions Taken
Following the incident, the pilot was suspended from flying and was required to undergo proficiency check flights. The airport management at EPPT prohibited landings on the north-western side of the airport, near the hangars and aircraft parking areas. The incident was thoroughly discussed with the pilots of the local aeroclub.
