Sequence of Events

According to the pilot's report, shortly after takeoff, while climbing through 400 to 500 feet above ground level, the engine stopped producing power. The pilot executed a forced landing to a plowed field. During the landing, the airplane nosed over and came to rest inverted. Damage was noted to the left wing, empennage, rudder, and vertical stabilizer.

Engine Examination

An examination of the engine was performed under the auspices of the Federal Aviation Administration. The engine rotated freely, and both magnetos operated properly. All six cylinders exhibited proper valve operation. The fuel bowl, filter, and carburetor's finger screen were free of foreign material. Compression was good in all cylinders except No. 6, which had scored cylinder walls and non-ferrous material present between the second compression ring and the oil control ring. Throttle, propeller, and mixture controls functioned normally. Fuel quantity in the tanks was adequate, and no contamination was found. Meteorological conditions were determined to be not conducive to serious carburetor icing in the operating environment.

Findings
